No decision made to release water from Kaptai dam

Rumors have spread on social media that the Kaptai Hydro-Electric Power Plant in Rangamati will release water through its spill-way.

The rumors suggested that water from Kaptai Lake would be released at 3pm on Thursday.

ATM Abduz Zaher, the manager of the Kaptai power plant confirmed that no decision has been made yet regarding the release of water.

He mentioned that the water level in the lake was at 103 MSL (Mean Sea Level) at 1:30pm, and by 4pm, it had risen to 104.28 MSL. By 6pm, the water level was 104.48 MSL.

The maximum water storage capacity of Kaptai Lake is 109 feet (MSL).

Water will only be released through the spillway if the water level reaches 109 meters MSL or close to it.

ATM Abduz Zaher further stated that if a decision is made to release water, the Rangamati District Administration, Rangunia Upazila Administration, and the Chittagong Port Authority will be notified through a notice at least six hours in advance.

He also mentioned that, barring continuous heavy rainfall, there is no concern for the water level to rise significantly in the next 24 hours. Therefore, there is currently no possibility of releasing water from Kaptai Lake.

If heavy rainfall occurs upstream causing the water level to rise, a meeting will be held with the relevant authorities to make a decision, and the public will be informed accordingly, the manger added.
