Sporadic gunshots and sound of mortar shell explosions have been heard from across the Naf river in Teknaf upazila on Cox’s Bazar since Monday night following the fighting between Myanmar junta and rebel Arakan Army in Rakhine state.
The sound of gunshots sparked panic among the people in Teknaf.
The patrol of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Coast Guard has increased in the bordering areas.
Jalia and Sudarpara of Teknaf municipality have been rocked following gunshots from Monday 8pm to Tuesday early morning which triggered panic among the local people.
Mohammad Ali, a resident of the Teknaf border, said that they had heard the sporadic sound over the night.
“Fear has been intensified among the people in Teknaf. Besides, the worsening situation of the war in Myanmar, Rohingyas are trying to intrude Bangladesh.”
The residents in the bordering area said that they have been experiencing torrential rain for the last few days. Amid this, after one war is going on between Myanmar junta and rebel Arakan army.
The houses of Naityongpara, Kayukkhalipara, Jaliapara, Chowdhury Para, Uttar Para, Dakshin Para, Kulalpara, Khangar Deil, Nazirpara, Moulvipaza, Mogpara of Sabrang, Accharbonia, Degillya Bil, Noyapara, Jaliapara of Shapuree Dwip are being rocked in the sound of mortar shells and bombs.
BGB and Coast Guard have increased patrol in 54 kilometre area from Shapuree Dwip to Whykong in Teknaf upazila.
Lieutenant Colonel Mohiuddin Ahmed, commanding officer of BGB-2 battalion, said that the BGB has increased patrol to obstruct Rohingya intrusion.
Mohammad Adnan Chowdhury, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Teknaf upazila, said that the conflict has increased in Myanmar adjoining Bangladesh border, for that surveillance has been strengthened in the bordering areas. Besides, law-enforcement agencies are in alert position.
