Two youths were detained with a toy pistol while attempting to meet Minister of Religious Affairs Faridul Haque Khan Dulal.
The incident occurred at the Dak Bungalow in the minister's constituency, Zila Parishad, in Islampur upazila of Jamalpur around 10pm on Sunday.
The arrestees, Tanveer Ahmed Tapu and Nihal Ahmed Lalat, are from the neighbouring Melandah upazila.
An Awami League activist named Liton discovered a pistol in the pants of one of the youths while at the Dak Bungalow. Leaders and activists present at the scene reported the youths to the police.
Suman Talukder, officer-in-charge of Islampur police station, said that the youths were beaten by the leaders and activists when they went to take off their shoes after meeting the minister. The police were then notified. The two were detained and brought to the police station, where a toy pistol was recovered from them.
An investigation is ongoing, and legal action will be taken based on the findings. Talukder also mentioned that the police are working to ensure the minister's security.
