The food situation in Sylhet is deteriorating due to continuous rain and upstream flooding.
Shah Sojib Hussain, assistant meteorologist at the Sylhet met office said that 294mm of rainfall was recorded in the last 24 hours till 6am on Tuesday.
A few parts of Sylhet city are also submerged due to heavy rainfall and upstream water, he added.
Suaib Hassan a resident of the Uposohor area said, they are experiencing a flood for the third time this year, creating immense suffering for the people.
Meanwhile, two major rivers, Surma and Kusiyara, are currently flowing above the danger level at several points in the district.
According to a bulletin from the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) at 12pm on Tuesday, the Surma River at Kanaighat is flowing 117cm above the danger level, while it is just one centimeter below the danger level at Sylhet point.
The Kushiyara River is above the danger level at several points: 77cm at Amalshid, 23cm at Sheula, 95cm at Fenchugonj, and 14cm at Sherpur.
The Sylhet district administration reports that around 8,304 flood-affected people have taken shelter in various flood centres, till 6am on Tuesday.
