A speedboat carrying patients from Teknaf in Cox's Bazar to Saint Martin's was targeted by gunfire from Myanmar.
However, no one was injured.
The incident occurred around 10am on Tuesday when the speedboat reached Naikkhongdia at the Naf River estuary.
According to witnesses, Secretary of the Boat Owners' Association Syed Alam said that a few people were returning to Saint Martin's in a speedboat after receiving treatment in Teknaf. The speedboat was targeted. Previously, shots had been fired from within Myanmar, but on Tuesday, they were fired from a small dinghy boat on the river. The passengers on the speedboat panicked, but they eventually reached Saint Martin's safely.
In this regard, Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Adnan Chowdhury said: “It is reported that our trawler was shot at from the Myanmar border. I have spoken to the officials in charge of the border. We are addressing these incidents. I request the residents of the island not to panic.”
Earlier, shots were fired at a cargo trawler from Naikkhongdia bordering Myanmar to Saint Martin's and at Bangladeshi election officials. The area is currently under the control of the Arakan Army. Members of this group are believed to have fired the shots.
