Benazir’s Savanna resort in Gopalganj closed

The Savanna Eco Resort and Natural Park in Gopalganj has been shut down amid protests by locals who are demonstrating to demand action against former police chief Benazir Ahmed for forceful eviction of the Hindus.

No visitor could enter the park, built on 621 bighas of land, due to the closure on Monday.

“It will remain closed for some time due to glitches in the sever. We will reopen the park once the problem is solved. It may take four to five days,” Booking Manager Md Sabbir told Dhaka Tribune.

The construction of the eco resort began in 2015, when Benazir was the director general of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). It is located on the border of Gopalganj’s Sadar and Madaripur’s Rajoir upazilas.

Locals say Benazir took over the land of the helpless families of the neighbourhood by force and using various strategies.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is investigating allegations of amassing illegal wealth raised against the former police chief.

Learning about the actions, locals protested outside the eco park on Saturday, but were dispersed by the police. Four people were injured during the protest. Later, police members were deployed in the area to avert untoward incidents.
