3 days of unrest: Rival factions of Chhatra league clash at CU

Clashes between rival factions of the Chittagong University (CU) unit of Chhatra League continued for the third consecutive day on Friday following internal conflicts.

The factions involved are known as CFC and Sixty-Nine, subgroups within the Chittagong University Chhatra League.

According to sources, the conflict erupted at 5pm on Friday.

CFC supporters gathered in front of Shah Amanat Hall, while Sixty-Nine affiliates reportedly hurled bricks in front of Shahjalal Hall.

Identifying themselves as followers of Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury and former city mayor AJM Nashir Uddin, respectively, CFC leaders and Sixty-Nine followers escalated tensions, leading to clashes based on trivial incidents on Thursday.

At least 27 individuals of both groups were injured.

Earlier, on Wednesday night, clashes occurred between Sixty-Nine and Bijoy group followers.

Proctor Dr Mohammad Nurul Azim Sikder said: “We are trying to control the situation. Police have been asked to fire tear shells. However, the police refused to fire tear shells as the students were dispersed.”

He said that legal action would be taken against the students involved in the clash.
