Chhatra League factions clash at Chittagong University

Leaders and activists of two factions of the Chhatra League clashed at the campus of Chittagong University on Thursday.

The clash took place around 12:30pm between the leaders and activists of Chhatra League's Bijoy and Sixty-Nine factions on the road in front of Shah Amanat Hall at the campus. 

Eyewitnesses reported an internal dispute between the leaders and activists of the two Chhatra League factions during the Pitha Utshob event at the university, which escalated into a clash.

A chase and counter chase took place. 

The incident of stone-throwing was also reported in the clash.

On information, members of the university's proctorial body and police rushed to the spot. 

Regarding the clash, Sakhawat Hossain, a leader of a section of the Chhatra League's Bijoy Group, said: "The conflict stemmed from an earlier incident where a student from the education and research department, Rashed, was assaulted during the Pitha Utshob, sparking the confrontation."

Members of the Sixty-Nine group involved in the clash could not be reached for comment. 

The Bijoy Group is known for its affiliation with Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, while the Sixty-Nine Group is associated with Chittagong Metropolitan Awami League General Secretary AJM Nashir Uddin.

Chittagong University Proctor Nurul Azim Sikder attributed the conflict to the aforementioned incident, saying: "The clash was primarily a result of a previous altercation. Upon receiving information about the clash, law enforcement personnel promptly arrived at the scene. The situation has now been brought under control."
