Chittagong airport health officer detained with four gold bars

The doctor on duty at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong has been detained with four gold bars, which he says were handed over to him by a passenger.

The detainee was identified as Dr MZ A Sharif, a 27th BCS (Health) Cadre, and he was on duty at the airport under the Directorate General of Health Services.

He said a passenger returning to Sharjah, Md Alauddin, arrived at the Chittagong airport on an Air Arabia flight at 9:30am on Monday, and handed him the gold bars.

Md Abdul Matin Talukder, Assistant Director of Chittagong Customs Intelligence and Investigation Department (CIID) said they detained both of them on Monday.

Mohiuddin Patwari, assistant commissioner of Chittagong Custom House, overseeing the airport, said: "The doctor's suspicious movements led to a search, resulting in the recovery of approximately 464 grams of gold bars."

He added that the doctor claimed the gold was given by a passenger. We have detained the said passenger as well for interrogation. “Legal action will be taken against both individuals."

He also said that the operation was a joint effort, involving Customs, CIID, and two other intelligence agencies.
