Train movement on Dhaka-Mymensingh-Dhaka route is likely to resume after 12 midnight.
The damaged railway line was operational 16 hours after the derailment of seven coaches of the Mohanganj Express at Bankharia (Chilai river) bridge of Gazipur on the Dhaka-Mymensingh railway route early Wednesday.
Bangladesh Railway Director General Kamrul Ahsan confirmed the matter on Wednesday evening.
Railways DG Kamrul Ahsan said that although the railway line is operational, train movement will commence after removing the damaged carriages and goods.
Already, 95% repair work of the damaged railway has been completed.
Three hundred feet of railway line along with the train carriage and engine were damaged in the accident. As 100 sleepers have become completely unusable, new railway sleepers are being laid at those places, said the DG.
“We hope to repair the entire railway line by 12am and start the train service from then on,” said the official.
A man was killed as the Dhaka-bound Mohanganj Express derailed at Bankharia (Chilai river) bridge of Gazipur on the Dhaka-Mymensingh railway early Wednesday.
The death of the deceased, Aslam, 35, a chicken trader from Gafargaon upazila of Mymensingh, was confirmed by his brother Mokhsedul.
Gazipur Fire Service Deputy Director (DAD) Abdullah Al Arefin confirmed the information, adding that miscreants uprooted the rail tracks with a cutting torch at some point in the night. As soon as the train that left Mohanganj at 11pm reached Bankharia’s Chilai Bridge in Gazipur, seven coaches along with the engine collapsed on the low ground next to the railway track.
The fire service recovered a 12-kg gas cylinder from the forest beside the railway tracks.
