A multi-storied building, Khorshed Mansion, tilted in Bayezid Bostami’s Raufabad area in Chittagong on Saturday.
The incident was reported at around 6:30pm.
Upon receiving the information, the Bayezid Fire Service Station promptly responded, evacuating residents from the affected building to ensure their safety, said Md Kamruzzaman, a senior officer at the fire station.
He said: "The building tilted in the evening, likely due to ongoing canal excavation on the north side. The excavation, part of a drainage project, displaced soil beneath, weakening pillars, and causing cracks. Residents of three adjacent buildings were also evacuated for safety."
Meanwhile, the district administration has formed a seven-member probe committee.
The Deputy Director of Local Government (DDLG) will serve as the convener of the committee, which includes representatives from the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), Chittagong Development Authority (CDA), Chittagong City Corporation (CCC), Additional District Magistrate, Department of Fire Service and Civil Defence, and Public Works Department (PWD).
