Cyclone Midhili: 2 killed in Chittagong as tree falls on them

Two people, including a child, were killed when a tree's branches fell on top of them due to the impact of Cyclone Midhili.

The incidents took place at Mirsharai and Sandwip in on Friday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as Abdul Wahab, 65, who died after a tree fell on him in Sandwip, Chittagong Civil Surgeon Mohammad Ilyas Chowdhury confirmed the information. 

"An elderly man was killed when a tree fell on Sandwip in the afternoon due to Cyclone Midhili. He was taken to Sandwip Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead,” he said.

Shahidul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sandwip police station, said: "One person died in Sandwip when a tree fell on him while returning home after prayers. Apart from this, no casualty has been reported in this upazila so far. However, tree branches have fallen in many places. Work is underway to remove them.”

On the other hand, a child died after a tree fell on her in Mirsharai upazila. 

The deceased was identified as Muntaha, daughter of Anwar Hossain Bhuiyan of the area.

Mohammad Faruk Hossain, uncle of the deceased, said: "When she came out of the house in the afternoon, a tree fell on Muntaha and seriously injured her. She was taken to upazila health complex where doctors declared her dead.”
