Mymensingh grapples with severe waterlogging due to heavy rain

Heavy rainfall has caused extensive waterlogging in many areas of Mymensingh city.

Houses, shops, and markets have been inundated in water due to incessant rain starting from Thursday evening.

Many people have spent sleepless nights as rainwater has entered their homes.

Paddy fields in the upazilas of the district are currently submerged due to heavy rainfall. Many ponds and fish enclosures in various areas have been washed away by the rising rainwater levels, causing concerns about extensive damage to the region.

In this regard, Deputy Commissioner Mostafizar Rahman said that rain has affected fish farming the most in the district.

In 13 upazilas, a huge number of fish have been washed away. In addition, many paddy fields have been submerged in every upazila. The damage has not yet been ascertained, said the DC.

Several areas of the district including Ganginarpar, Bashbari Colony, Dhopakhola, Charpara, Notun Bazar, Station Road, Nayapara, Brahmapally, Kalibari, Gulkibari, Amlapara, Bhatikashar in Mymensingh city have gone under waist-deep water.

Power outages

On Thursday night, the rain water entered the control room of Mymensingh city's Kewatkhali Power Grid at around 10pm.

After receiving the information, a fire service team went to the spot and cleared the room within three hours.

Due to the incident, electricity was cut off in several areas, said Mymensingh Fire Station Officer Julhas Uddin.

However, the water entered the power grid again after 2am, resulting in a power outage in several areas in the city, said Indrajit Debnath, executive engineer of Mymensingh Power Development Board (South).

The power cuts had affected multiple areas within the city, including Station Road, Padri Mission, and Charpara. Indrajit Debnath mentioned that it is currently uncertain how long it will take to rectify the power issues.

Ekramul Haque Titu, the mayor of Mymensingh City Corporation, said water had started to decrease as there was less rain on Friday.

A team is working to ensure that the water is removed quickly, he added.

Medical service halted

Mymensingh Medical College Hospital Deputy Director Zakiul Islam said certain sections of the hospital grounds are situated at a lower elevation and have been inundated with water.

The staff quarters on the ground floor have also experienced flooding. Medical services were being operated with generators last night as there was no electricity.

However, starting from this morning, the hospital has been relying on alternative power sources to ensure the uninterrupted operation of medical services, he added.

Furthermore, a tragic incident occurred when a 65-year-old woman named Poly was electrocuted upon coming into contact with a live electric wire while wading through knee-deep water.
