A Chhatra League activist died and at least 20 others were injured in a clash between the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the ruling Awami League in Chittagong’s Mirsharai upazila on Friday.
The clash erupted around 4:30pm on Friday at the upazila’s Azampur Bazar area.
The deceased has been identified as Rayhan Hossain Ruman, 16, son of the late Nurer Zaman.
Both parties claim that 20 of their respective activists were injured during the scuffle.
Mirsharai upazila unit BNP convening committee member Shahinul Islam Swapan said that Chittagong North District BNP Joint Convener Nurul Amin was organizing a meeting in the Osmanpur union in preparation for the scheduled road march from Comilla to Chittagong on October 5.
“During this time, local Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League activists attacked them, injuring at least 15 BNP, Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal leaders,” he alleged.
The enraged BNP activists then retaliated against Chhatra League activists, ensuing the clash, he added.
On the other hand, Osmanpur union unit Awami League President Md Shah Alam said followers of BNP leader Nurul Amin attacked Chhatra League leader Hasan and a few of his comrades.
“Five were injured in this attack. During this incident, a Chhatra League activist named Jahed Hossain Ruman lost his life,” he added.
In response to the BNP's allegations, he said: “That is an utter lie. They attacked our leaders and workers unprovoked.”
Jorarganj union police station Office-in-Charge (OC) Md Jahid Hossain said police have been dispatched to the scene and more details would be provided later.
