Child goes missing after falling into drain in Chittagong

A one-and-a-half-year-old boy went missing after falling into a drain in Chittagong’s Agrabad area on Sunday afternoon.

The missing child was identified as Yasin Arafat, son of Saddam Hussain of the area.

Relatives assumed that the child fell into an open drain near the house. They are now struggling to locate him.

On information, a diving team of Fire Service and Civil Defence is currently carrying out a search operation in the drain.

The incident occurred in the Rangipara area of Agrabad on Sunday evening, said Shafiqul Islam, in-charge of Agrabad Fire Service Station.

He said that the house of the minor boy is situated next to the drain.

As the child could not be traced after 4:30pm, relatives suspected he might have fallen into the drain.

“We received the information at 5:30pm and have begun searching the drain,” said the fire service official.

Despite the presence of numerous CCTV cameras in the area, the part of the drain where the child likely fell lacks coverage by the cameras.

The low-lying areas of the port city have been inundated due to the torrential rains that swept through the city from Saturday night, causing immense sufferings to the city dwellers.
