A trawler carrying 46 passengers sank in the branch river of Padma near Subchani Bazar of Outshahi union of Munshiganj's Tongibari upazila on Saturday.
As of now, eight bodies have been recovered, and there are reports of several others missing.
According to Louhajung Fire Service Station Officer Qais Ahmed, the accident occurred around 8:30pm.
"So far, we have recovered the bodies of eight people, and four of them have been sent to the local hospital. Two bodies, including a child, remain on the river bank," he said.
Local authorities arrived at the scene to assess the situation. A diving team from Dhaka is on its way to assist with the ongoing rescue efforts.
The cause of the trawler's sinking is believed to be a collision with a bulkhead carrying sand.
Munshiganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Finance and Administration) Suman Deb mentioned that police are still unable to confirm the exact number of casualties and missing persons.
"Our team is en route to the scene, and I will provide more information after conducting a thorough assessment," he said.
