Another arrest made over labour leader Shahidul’s murder

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested another individual for his alleged involvement in the murder of Shahidul Islam, president of the Gazipur branch of the Bangladesh Garment and Industrial Workers Federation (BGIWF).

Aakash Ahmed Babul, 43, was nabbed in a raid conducted in Kalatali, Cox's Bazar, early Friday, said RAB-15 deputy chief Major Syed Sadikul Haq.

A case was earlier filed at Tongi West police station, accusing six individuals of the murder, with Babul as the second accused.

During primary interrogation, Babul admitted to his involvement in the murder, said the RAB officer.

Law Minister Anisul Huq on Thursday said that the visiting US delegation sought a proper investigation into the killing of labour leader Shahidul Islam.

The law minister said: “I clearly told them that Bangladesh has no culture of impunity. Justice is ensured upon investigation of any crime in Bangladesh now, and there will be no exception in this case either.”

On June 25, there were protests among the workers of Prince Jacquard Sweater Limited factory over the payment of Eid bonuses and arrears.

Labour leader Shahidul Islam, along with companions Mostafa, Sharif, and Akkas, visited the factory in the evening.

On their way back after the discussion, they were attacked and beaten up near the factory by the leaders and activists of the opposing labour organization.

In the confrontation, Shahidul Islam, along with four other labour leaders, were injured.

Locals rushed them to the hospital, where doctors declared Shahidul Islam dead.
