Gazipur man dies after alleged RAB brutality

A man died after the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) raided his Tongi home on Saturday and allegedly tortured him under suspicion of drug possession.

The family of 40-year-old Asad Sheikh claimed that the members of the elite police unit assaulted while raiding his home for drugs.

According to them, a team of the RAB-1 raided Asad’s home in Tongi around 1pm on Saturday, when he was beaten by the law enforcers.

Hours after the raid, Asad fell sick, when he was rushed to the medical college hospital in Gazipur town, where the doctors declared him dead, they said.

They claimed that Asad, who was a mechanic at a car workshop, was not involved in drug peddling.

Police said that the body had some marks.

“But we are not sure whether they were cause by assault or torture,” said OC Javed Masud of the Tongi police station.

The cause of death can be known after an autopsy, said the police officer.

The RAB, however, denied of torturing Asad.

An official of the RAB-1, asking not to be named, said Asad’s home was raided based on allegations of drug peddling against him.

“But he was not assaulted or tortured,” said the RAB official before adding they were looking into Asad’s track records.
