Severe erosion washes away 150 houses in Jamalpur

The Jamuna has washed away at least 150 houses in Jamalpur in the past couple of days.

Due to severe river erosion, local farmers said they have lost hundreds of acres of farmland.

In Islampur, water has started to recede in the Jamuna but river erosion is currently at its peak.

Local farmer Abdul Kuddus said that this is the time when river erosion threatens them the most. At one side, water starts to recede and on the other new char areas appear, the farmer added.

Meanwhile, hundreds of families live in despair as their homes are threatened by river erosion. It is not only houses and local schools but also madrasahs and roads which are at risk of breaking down. Local people said they are unable to relocate to safe places with their belongings and cattle due to the sudden movement of water in the river.
