Students of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) on Tuesday night staged a demonstration blocking roads demanding uninterrupted power supply to the campus.
They blocked Rangpur, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Dhaka highways around 10:45pm.
Traffic on both sides of the highway came to a standstill due to the protest blocking the road in front of the university's first gate.
As a result, long traffic jams were created on both sides.
Proctor Golam Rabbani confirmed the students' protest.
Students complained that loadshedding is a daily occurrence on the campus. It occurs for hours without any prior notice. There is no specific schedule for loadshedding either. As a result, there is a great disturbance in their study.
Residential students suffered a lot as the electricity supply was cut off in the university area for about eight hours from 3pm to 10:30pm.
The students called the officials concerned at Northern Electricity Supply Company (Nesco) several times but did not get any response. As a result, they were forced to take to the streets to demand uninterrupted electricity supply.
In this regard, many students complained that Nesco deliberately made their lives miserable by cutting off power for several hours.
Meanwhile, after the university authorities contacted Nesco, the students lifted the blockade when the power supply was restored at around 1:15am on Wednesday.
In this regard, Nesco engineer Samaiful Islam said that the electricity connection was cut off due to the storm on Tuesday afternoon. It takes time to re-establish the power connection because it takes a long time to identify the problem.
