The police have pickup up and subsequently released Rajshahi BNP Convener Abu Sayeed Chand's brother and several others close to him for questioning following the politician's recent death threat made against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Meanwhile, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a press briefing at Naya Paltan in Dhaka on Tuesday claimed the police had arrested Chand's brother Azizul Bari Mukta; his eldest daughter's husband Zia, who is the convener of Rajshahi Jubo Dal; and his Personal Secretary Jalal's wife, mother-in-law and younger brother, being unable to nab the BNP leader.
The police however said they released them after interrogation.
Mukta told Dhaka Tribune: “The Puthia circle SP took us away at 10:30pm on Monday and released us at midnight after questioning. We are all currently in our respective homes. They inquired about my brother. But I left my village home 23 years ago; I was not able to give any information as I have not been in contact with my brother.”
Puthia police station OC Faruk Hossain refuted Rizvi's claim but said the police were trying to arrest Chand.
Abu Sayeed Chand on Friday afternoon said: “No more 27- or 10-point demands, just one point now – send Sheikh Hasina to the grave. We will do whatever is necessary to get Sheikh Hasina to resign.”
Footage of his comment went viral on social media, leading to an uproar and drawing condemnations.
The BNP leader has also been sued in several cases in this connection.
