Due to change in direction of the very severe cyclone Mocha, the extent of damage was much lower than anticipated in most areas of Bangladesh except for Saint Martin's Island and Teknaf.
In Teknaf, 20,000 consumers are still without power due to the damage to the power distribution system caused by the storm.
Besides, Saint Martin's Island's own electricity system was also yet to become operational.
Those concerned are hoping that everything will return to normal within two days.
Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) Palli Bidyut Samity Cox's Bazar-1 supplies electricity to Teknaf.
They said that the power system of Teknaf has been damaged more in the area under their jurisdiction due to the storm. Some poles, wires, and meters were damaged during the storm.
In addition, many transformers were damaged a lot. However, they are unable to say how much damage has been done in total.
Authorities are still assessing the extent of damage. They said that it will take one or two days to take full account of the situation.
Cox's Bazar PBS Accountant Zahidur Rahman said: “Teknaf is the most affected. We have about 60,000 consumers there. Out of this, an average of 40,000 customers are getting electricity.
“However, about 20,000 customers are still without electricity due to broken infrastructure. We have started repair works since the storm stopped. Still the work is in progress. We expect some more consumers to get power soon,” he added.
On the other hand, Saint Martin uses solar power. As the infrastructure was damaged due to the storm, power supply did not resume there on Monday. As a result, the residents who returned from the shelter have suffered. Electricity supply has been stopped there since Saturday afternoon.
