Collision of passenger, freight trains leaves 20 injured in Comilla

Eight carriages and the locomotive of the Dhaka-bound Sonar Bangla Express derailed after hitting a stationary freight train at Hasanpur Railway Station of Comilla on Sunday evening. 

At least 20 people were injured in the incident. 

Five of them were sent to hospital in critical condition, said Jashim Uddin Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Laksham Railway police station.

Nangalkot Railway Station Master Jamal Uddin said that a freight train was waiting at Hasanpur Railway Station on Sunday around 7:15 PM.

At that time, the express train hit the freight train from behind. 

Tanveer, a policeman who was in the passenger train, said: “We were preparing to wash our hands after Iftar. There was a huge shock and sound. Within 30 seconds, the train overturned.”

Following the accident, two relief trains left for the spot from Akhaura and Laksam to take part in the rescue work.

The train movement resumed on the Dhaka-Chittagong route resumed after two hours.

The Nangalkot Railway Authority said that the details will be given after the completion of the rescue operation.

A top official of Bangladesh Railway stated that the express was diverted from the main line to a line where the freight train was stationary due to an error.
