An Awami League leader has been shot dead by a group of unidentified miscreants in Tarash upazila of Sirajganj.
The incident took place on Saturday around 7:30pm in Bhogalman Charmatha area of Desigram union.
The deceased was Abdul Quddus, 50, former chairman of Desigram Union Parishad and former president of union Awami League unit.
In the last Union Parishad election, he contested as a candidate using the boat symbol and was defeated.
Desigram Union Parishad Chairman Gyanendra Nath Basak said: “Abdul Quddus was sitting in a shop in when some strangers came out of nowhere and opened fire. Then they managed to quickly ran away. Abdul Quddus died on the spot.”
Tarash police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahidul Islam said Abdul Quddus was shot in the chest.
“We have reached the spot and are preparing a detailed report,” he added.
The assistant superintendent of police (Ullapara and Tarash Circle) said: "We have received the information and a team led by the OC has been sent there. Necessary measures will be taken after analysing the situation.”
