Farmer injured in Sundarbans tiger attack

A farmer was attacked by a tiger in the Sundarbans when he went there to find his cow.

Fazlu Gazi, 62, was admitted to the Bagerhat District Hospital on Friday.

The incident occurred in the forest adjacent to North Rajapur village under the Sarankhola range of the Sundarban East Forest Division last Tuesday.

Fazlu's wife, Feroza Begum, said their cow went free and entered the Sundarbans crossing the dried-up Bhola River.

The tiger attacked Fazlu when he went to the forest to bring his cow back home, she added.

Fazlu Gazi, who is under treatment in the hospital, said he found the cattle as soon as he entered the Sundarbans.

“Then, I felt something coming from behind. I turned out and saw a tiger. I started screaming. There were also some boatmen there, they also began screaming and ran toward me. Meanwhile, the tiger bit my leg. But it left me hearing our screams,” he added.

Fazlu's son, Feroz Gazi, said they did not tell anyone out of fear as Fazlu did not have a pass (permission to enter the forest). Therefore, Fazlu was being treated at home by a local village doctor. Later, the doctor told them to admit Fazlu to a hospital.

Bagerhat District Hospital Supervisor Dr Asim Kumar Samaddar said the wounds were deep.

“The victim cannot afford medical expenses. We are providing him with our all-out support," he added.
