6 buses set ablaze in Gazipur after rumour of fatal crash

Following a rumour of fatal car accidents, a mob vandalized 50 vehicles, including six buses, on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in the Gachha neighbourhood of Gazipur city on Tuesday evening.
According to the authorities, the attack caused both sides of the highway to stay closed to traffic for almost two hours.
Alamgir Hossain, deputy commissioner at the Traffic Division of the Gazipur Metropolitan Police, said at about 9:45pm, the police and firefighters were able to bring the situation under control.
Around 7pm, a man and his granddaughter were crossing a road in Gachha when they were struck by a bus of Anabil Paribahan, according to police and residents. Both of them were injured.
Locals hurried them to Tairunnessa Memorial Medical College and Hospital. Their identities were not immediately known.
Following the incident, a rumour that the two were murdered in a car accident started to spread, which led to the mob attack.
At least 50 automobiles were damaged, while six more buses were set on fire.
According to Abdul Al Arefin, deputy assistant director at the Gazipur Fire Service, passengers disembarked from several vehicles during the event. It was not immediately known whether any passengers were injured.
The injured grandfather-granddaughter duo were in critical condition, according to Ashraf Hossain, an emergency department physician at Tairunnessa Memorial Medical College and Hospital.
They were later sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
