Narail youth on 3-day remand for hurting religious sentiments

The youth who posted a Facebook status criticizing Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in Narail’s Lohagara Upazila has been put on a three-day remand.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Morshedul Alam approved the remand plea after a hearing on Sunday.

Lohagara Police OC Sheikh Abu Hena Milon told Dhaka Tribune that police sought seven days to question Akash Shah, 21, in custody.

Akash was arrested from Khulna’s Dumuria on Saturday night after a case was filed against him under the Digital Security Act.

On Friday, a mob vandalized a temple, grocery stores and several homes of the Hindu community in the Dighalia Bazar area of Lohagara upazila.

Angry villagers became violent in the afternoon, alleging that Akash Saha had made a post on Facebook hurting their religious sentiments.

After learning of the Facebook post, the mob attacked and vandalized several homes, including that of the boy’s family.

They also broke into Sahapara temple and broke the furniture inside and vandalized several shops.

On Saturday, Narail-2 lawmaker and former cricketer, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza visited the scene and provided financial aid to the affected families.

The district administration formed a committee headed by Additional District Magistrate Jubayer Hossain to probe the matter.

The National Human Rights Commission on Sunday condemned the attack, saying that communal violence in a secular country such as Bangladesh was unacceptable.
