The 21 students of Dhaka University (DU), who were trapped by floods in a restaurant while visiting Tanguar Haor in Sunamganj, have been rescued.
At the request of the DU Administration, Sylhet Sadar Deputy Commissioner Jahangir Hossain took charge and rescued them.
One of the students, Shoaib Ahmed, from the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism of DU, told Bangla Tribune that they have been moved to Sylhet District Police Lines.
“We have been moved from Pansi restaurant but the situation here is also not good. The police line too is under knee-deep water,” he said.
Shoaib added that the students have contacted Bangladesh Army and a speedboat is being sent for them.
“We will head towards Sylhet first and then go to Dhaka. The university's vice-chancellor, proctor and chairman of our department are keeping in touch with us at all times,” he added.
The students were trapped by floods while visiting Tanguar Haor in Sunamganj, three days ago.
As many as 19 of the stranded students, including seven females, are from the university's Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, reports UNB.
Shoaib Ahmed sent an SOS saying: "We are in dire need of food and drinking water and there is no toilet facility here. Here, most of our phones are out of battery and not working properly due to poor network.”
Another student of the group, Usama Rafid, posted on his Facebook timeline 16 hours back saying: "We all have some stories to tell. From a random tour to survival thriller."
When asked, DU Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani said: "I am in touch with the local administration. We have asked for the cooperation of local administration and local people's representatives in this regard. We strongly urged them to rescue the students by sending trained rescue teams if necessary."
"I have also talked to the trapped students. They are still well and healthy. I have spoken to the police and district commissioner and asked them for emergency assistance, food and rescue," he added.
