5 killed in lorry-autorickshaw collision on Dhaka-Mawa Expressway

Five passengers were killed when a CNG-powered autorickshaw collided with a lorry carrying Veku machines on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway.

The accident was reported near Teghoria CNG stand of Dhaka's South Keraniganj police station on Thursday at midnight.

Additional Superintendent of Police Amrit Kumar, of Narayanganj Zone Highway Police, confirmed the matter to Bangla Tribune.

The deceased were identified as autorickshaw driver Tamal, 18, passenger Jonaid Hossain Jihad, 23, Nahid Hossain Fahim, 21, and Samad, 20. The identity of the other victim remained till the filing of this report. 

Another injured passenger is undergoing treatment at Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital in Dhaka. 

Dhaka-Mawa Highway police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Afzal Hossain said the Mawa-bound speeding autorickshaw lost control and went under the lorry as the lorry took a left turn from the Teghoria stand. 

“At this time, the autorickshaw was crushed along with the passengers and drivers inside.

Four people died on the spot as locals could not get them out of the lorry despite their best efforts,” he observed.

The OC added that two others were rescued and taken to the hospital where another died while undergoing treatment. 

Police seized the lorry but the driver escaped.
