Pickup owner held over death of 6 brothers in Cox’s Bazar crash

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested the owner of a pickup truck in connection with the killing of six brothers in a road accident in Cox's Bazar.

Mahamudul Karim, 40, was arrested during a raid in east Boro-Bhewla area of Chakaria upazila early on Tuesday, according to Cox's Bazar PBI Inspector Enamul Haque Chowdhury.

Earlier, on February 12, RAB arrested pick-up driver Saidul Islam Sifat from Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area.

On the morning of February 8, nine brothers and sisters went to the cremation ground on the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway in Malumghat Ringvang area of Dulahazara union of Chakaria upazila to pay their respects to their late father.

The six brothers were killed after they were hit by a pickup truck on their way home.

Pallab Sushil, brother of the deceased, filed a case against the pickup driver at Chakaria police station.

The case was initially handed over to the Highway Police for investigation but was later handed over to the PBI.

Inspector Enamul Haque said that after handing over the case to the PBI, the police conducted raids at various possible locations to find the owner of the pickup.

A team of police went on a raid on Monday night on the news that pickup owner Mahamudul Karim was staying in Lohagarh upazila of Chittagong district. At that time, sensing the presence of the police, he lay low.

Later on Tuesday morning, pick-up owner Mahamudul Karim was arrested by the PBI team on the basis of a tip-off that he was staying at his house in Boro-Bhewla area.

The arrested pickup owner was sent to Cox's Bazar court on Tuesday afternoon, a PBI inspector said.
