The district administration in Bogra has distributed cash assistance among the family members of five people killed during Union Parishad polls violence on January 5.
The families of the victims received Tk100,000 each from Deputy Commissioner Ziaul Haque at his office on Monday.
Of the deceased, housewife Kulsum Akhter, vegetable trader Abdur Rashid, rickshaw puller Alamgir Hossain and farmer Khorshed Ali were killed after BGB personnel opened fire during a clash that ensued following election officials’ decision to not announce the results of the vote at Baliadighi union under Gabtoli upazila.
Zakir Hossain, meanwhile, was stabbed to death in a clash between the supporters of two member candidates during the election to Rameswarpur union under the same upazila.
Families of the deceased alleged that the magistrate on duty, Shajahanpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shakil Ahmed, had ordered gunshots to favor a candidate.
DC Ziaul on Monday told reporters that the families of the victims would get all necessary support from the administration during their distress.
Earlier, Gabtoli Upazila Chairman Rafi Newaz Khan Robin handed over Tk50,000 to each of the families of the four victims killed in BGB firing.
On the other hand, over 300 people have been sued in two cases filed with the local police station over the deaths.
Sushasoner Jonno Nagorik (SHUJAN) in Gabtoli organized a human chain demanding trial of those responsible for the loss of lives in the upazila during the UP polls.
At least 11 people were killed during clashes and violence at different districts during the fifth phase of the UP elections.
