A case has been filed against seven people including the admin of the YouTube channel Nagorik TV, on allegations of uploading videos defaming Information Minister Hasan Mahmud and his family members.
Emrul Karim filed the case on Tuesday against seven individuals, including the administrator, Nazmus Saqib, who lives in the US.
Besides, social media users who liked, shared and commented on the video, have been made defendants in the case.
Chittagong Cyber Tribunal Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Mezbah Uddin confirmed that Judge Jahirul Kabir's court accepted the case and directed the counter-terrorism unit of the Chittagong Divisional Cyber Tribunal to investigate the matter.
He said that the court also ordered the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and relevant authorities to remove the video from both YouTube and Facebook.
The video, which allegedly exposes corruption involving the information minister and his two brothers, Khaled Mahmud and Ershad Mahmud, was uploaded on Nagorik TV Facebook and YouTube pages four days ago.
The other accused people are HM Kamal, Azad Shahadat, Sunny Pradhan, Saiful Islam Talukdar, Khondkar Islam, and Harun Rashid.
The plaintiff emphasized that individuals who liked, commented, or shared the video will face charges.
Furthermore, future engagement with the video will also lead to being listed as an accused.
The charges against all individuals have been filed under Sections 25(2), 26(2), 29(1), and 35 of the Digital Security Act.
Emrul Karim, the plaintiff, stated in his complaint that the 13:15-minute video contains entirely false, fabricated, baseless, conspiratorial, defamatory, and intentional information, using visuals of the information minister and his brothers.
The video was allegedly uploaded with the intent to politically defame Hasan Mahmud and his family members.
Earlier, on June 19, Ariful Islam, the Forest and Environment Affairs Secretary of Rangunia Upazila Jubo League, filed a separate case at Chawkbazar police station, echoing similar accusations against the defendants.
