Journo murder: Awami League suspends UP Chairman Babu

The Awami League has suspended Jamalpur's Sadhurpara UP Chairman Mahmudul Alam Babu for his alleged involvement in the killing of journalist Golam Rabbani Nadim, a district correspondent of the Banglanews24.com.

Bokshiganj upazila unit Awami League President Shahina Begum and General Secretary Ismail Hossain Talukdar Babul issued a letter in this regard on Friday.

The letter mentions that Awami League's image has been greatly tarnished as Mahmudul Alam Babu's involvement in the incident has been strongly mentioned in the administration and various media outlets.

“As your lack of organizational activities and misconduct has garnered attention in multiple media outlets, hence you are being suspended from the position of general secretary of the Sadhurpara Union unit of Awami League and facing a suspension from the organization due to your violation of party discipline,” the letter reads.

The letter further ordered Mahmudul Alam Babu to explain why he should not be expelled from the party in seven working days.

Nadim sought security

Some three months ago, Golam Rabbani Nadim sought assistance from the prime minister, home minister, and the police administration for safety.

Nadim's family has claimed that he was a victim of several attacks, but never received justice.

Locals said Nadim was attacked allegedly by followers of Bokshiganj upazila unit Awami League President Shahina Begum in April.

Upon filing a case against the perpetrators, supporters of Shahina Begum made him withdraw the charges.

Bokshiganj police station Officer-in-Charge Sohel Rana said no one filed a case against journalist Nadim's murder yet.

“Nadim's family said they will file a case tonight (Saturday night),” he added.

So far six people have been detained over the murder of the journalist.

Nadim was attacked on the night of June 14 in Bokshiganj and was brutally beaten by unidentified assailants.

Up to 15 people, allegedly led by UP Chairman Babu, attacked Nadim in the Paathaati Mor area when he was returning home on a motorbike after work.

He died of a severe brain haemorrhage on Thursday morning at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

Nadim was buried at his family graveyard in the Gomer Char village after two rounds of funeral prayers on Friday.
