Amid torrential rains for the last five days since Sunday and tidal surges influenced by low pressure over the Bay, 750 hectares of cropland have been inundated in Bagerhat, said the Department of Agricultural Extension on Thursday.
On Thursday, the sun became visible after five days but heavy rains from 3am to 6am inundated the low-lying areas.
The UNB correspondent saw knee-deep water at different places in Bagerhat Sadar, Rampal, Morrelganj, Kachua, Sharankhola and Mongla upazilas.
According to the DAE, of the inundated croplands, 608 hectares are transplanted Aman paddy land, 140 hectares are different vegetables land and five hectares are betel leaf land.
Abul Hossain, a farmer from Majhidanga village of Bagerhat Sadar upazila, said their houses and crops are still waterlogged due to rains and tidal surges.
After remaining underwater for six days till Thursday, their vegetables including cucumber, bitter gourd, juniper and green peppers were damaged, local farmers said.
“Farmers have been advised to drain out water quickly. If there is no rain for the next two or three days, there is no chance of crop damage, and so far no damage has been reported,” said Azizur Rahman, deputy director of Bagerhat DAE.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) of Bagerhat Hafiz Al-Asad said already all upazila nirbahi officers (UNOs) have been instructed to prepare a list of losses caused by rains and tidal surges and send it to the deputy commissioner's office.
