Due to continuous rainfall, the water levels of three main rivers of Tangail - Jamuna, Dhaleshwari and Jhenai have been rising, and they are flowing above danger levels as of Tuesday morning.
Bangladesh Water Development Board in Tangail reported that in the last 24 hours till Tuesday morning, the water level of Jamuna River increased by 15cm and flowed 47cm above the danger level Dhaleshwari River has risen by 16cm and flowed 12cm above the danger level, and Jhenai River has risen by 15cm and flowing 12cm above the danger level.
As a result of the rising water level, several new areas in Tangail Sadar upazila, Kalihati, Bhuapur, Gopalpur chars, and low-lying areas have been inundated.
Meanwhile, around 3,000 hectares of paddy, jute, and sesame fields in Bhunapur, Kalihati, Sadar, Basail and Nagarpur upazilas have been submerged in floodwater, said
Ahsanul Bashar, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension.

“If the floodwater recedes within a week, then there will be partial damage. However, the exact amount of damage will be known after the water fully subside,” he added.
Bashar further assured that the department would assist the affected farmers of the district.
Executive Engineer Sirajul Islam of Tangail BWDB said authorities are working in the areas where river erosion was reported.
Meanwhile, Tangail Deputy Commissioner Ataul Gani said that the upazila nirbahi officers have been instructed to assist the people affected by the flood.
“There are adequate relief materials in our hands. Medical teams have also been formed for the flood victims,” he added.
