Two die after ‘drinking rectified spirit’ in Jamalpur

Two people died after allegedly drinking rectified spirit in Madarganj upazila of Jamalpur district on Tuesday night.

The deceased were identified as Hafizur Kasai, 75, and Md Ehsan, 35, both from the Teghoria village

According to locals, they fell ill at around 11pm after drinking rectified spirit from a homeopathy pharmacy at Taghoria bazar. 

They died on their way to Madarganj Upazila Health Complex.

Charpakerdaha UP Chairman Badrul Amin said the duo used to regularly drink the spirit from a pharmacy and owners of the pharmacy were warned several times about this. 

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Madarganj Eleshai Ritchil and Madarganj police station OC Mahbubul Haque visited the bazar and collected samples of rectified spirit from three pharmacies, reported UNB

“The bodies of the deceased have been sent to Jamalpur General Hospital morgue for autopsy to ascertain the cause of death. Police have launched an investigation in this regard,” said the OC.
