Residents still suffer as Surma, Kushiyara water levels drop

Although water levels in Surma and Kushiyara rivers in Sylhet have dropped significantly, the residents of the district are yet to see any difference in the flood-affected areas.

Several upazilas and cities of Sylhet are still inundated with floodwater, and many houses are flooded.

AKM Niloy Pasha, a sub-divisional engineer at Water Development Board (WDB) told Dhaka Tribune that Surma was flowing just 11cm above its danger level on Sunday. The water level has dropped around 18cm from the previous day.

He added that the Kushiyara River’s water level at Zakiganj has decreased by 26cm. However, the river is still flowing 122cm above the danger level at that point.

Sunil Singho, a resident of Chhararapar in Sylhet city, said that even though the flood water has decreased in the city, his house is still inundated.

“My family is suffering from various skin diseases due to the polluted floodwater,” he added.

Previously, several cities went under knee-deep water as continuous rainfall caused Surma to flow above its danger mark.

On Saturday, water levels of Surma and Kushiyara rivers started to drop gradually.

Bangladesh Water Development Board Executive Engineer Asif Ahmed told Dhaka Tribune that the water levels in the rivers of Sylhet had started to fall due to low rainfall in Cherrapunji and Assam of India.
