BGB troops to be deployed ahead of Comilla city polls

A Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) platoon will be deployed in Comilla from May 15, a month before the city corporation polls scheduled for June 15.

They will work with local law enforcement officers to maintain security and ensure a peaceful polling environment during the elections.

In addition, three executive magistrates will be working in the area from May 12.

The decision came during an Election Commission meeting on Monday.

According to an Election Commission media statement, law enforcement officers and the administration have taken various steps to ensure a peaceful environment and prevent any kind of "showdown."

Moreover, as of Monday, law enforcement agencies have fined 209 motorcyclists Tk5,75,000, the statement said, citing a returning officer.

On April 25, the Election Commission announced the polls’ schedule for the Comilla City Corporation as well as six municipalities and 135 union parishads.

The deadline for filing nominations is May 17. Officials will verify the documents on May 19, and aspirants will get until May 26 to pull out from the races. Polls symbols will be allotted to candidates on May 27.

Balloting in Comilla city, six municipalities and the 135 union parishads will be held through electronic voting machines (EVMs).
