RU Chhatra League leader kicks student out of hall

A Chhatra League leader evicted a resident student of Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Haque Hall of Rajshahi University on Tuesday.

The victim has been identified as Akib Javed, a student of the Department of Statistics’ 2019-20 academic year and resident student of Room No 129.

The accused is Mostafizur Rahman alias Ratul, president of the hall unit Chhatra League.

Akib claimed that Mostafizur had given him an ultimatum to leave the hall by 9am on Tuesday.

At the end of the allotted time, Mostafizur with around eight associates threw Akib’s bedding and belongings, including books, out of the room even though Akib had moved to the room last month with the permission of the hall provost.

Later, the provost gave him an abandoned room for a temporary stay. “In this situation, I feel insecure. I want to stay in my allotted room.” he added.

According to hall sources, the hall administration opened an application for the residence in early January. At the beginning of March, Akib moved to the room. One of the students of the 2015-16 session was in that room until April 8. Later, Akib had the room to himself.

After evicting Akib, the Chhatra League leader illegally allotted the room to one Kamal Kumar Paul from the academic year 2018-19, though he is not a resident student.

Kamal admitted that Mostafizur had allowed him to stay, because they know each other.

Asked about the incident, Mostafizur said: “I did not let anyone out of the hall. Akib used to share a bed in another room whereas a boy named Ashiq lived in Room No 129. After he left, suddenly Akib came to this room even though it was confirmed that Kamal will be in that room on the basis of seniority.”

Golam Kibria, president of RU unit Chhatra League, said organizational measures would be taken if an allegation was made against any of their leaders and activists.

Hall Provost Habibur Rahman said that they were taking necessary steps to arrange a room for Akib for now. “The matter is being investigated and a decision will be taken soon.”

He added that Akib had not informed the administration of the ultimatum including the fact that he had moved in last month. “Moreover, a student does not have the authority to evict anyone from a room. We’ve taken the matter seriously,” he added.
