Gang-rape of student: Protest continues for fourth day at Gopalganj university

Students of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) in Gopalganj brought out a candlelight procession as part of their protest demanding justice following the rape of a fellow student and the attack on demonstrators.

The procession started on Sunday evening in front of the administrative building of the university. 

Later, the students walked around the campus with burning candles chanting slogans. 

Meanwhile, BSMRSTU authorities have decided to suspend classes and examinations till Thursday at the university. 

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the academic council, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof AQM Mahbub, on Sunday afternoon.

The university Registrar Raziur Rahman confirmed the matter.

Earlier in the day, the fourth day of the protest, the students staged a symbolic hanging of the culprits in front of the university’s administrative building protesting the rape that took place on Wednesday and the attacks on protesting students taking place the next day.

Six students dressed up as criminals with their heads wrapped in black cloth and another student played the role of the executioner.

Later, the agitating students took out a procession from the administrative building and paraded around the campus. Agitated students from all departments of the university took part in the protest.

The students along with teachers formed a human chain on the Gopalganj-Tungipara road in the morning. 

On Saturday, BSMRSTU teachers and students formed a similar human chain on the campus. 

At a press conference, the students said not only the rapists, but the attackers have to be identified and brought to book. 

They have urged the authorities to meet their demands, including directives from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on ensuring the safety of the students.

Meanwhile, the six people arrested over the gang-rape have admitted to the crime in their confessional statements before a Gopalganj court.

Earlier, they were produced before the court of Judicial Magistrate Tania Sultana and Md Sharifur Rahman. The court later sent the arrestees to jail. 

Shital Chantra Pal, inspector at Gopalganj sadar police station, confirmed the matter. 

RAB arrested them on Friday night from different locations of the district. The arrestees are— Rakib Mia, 22, Piyash Fakir, 26, Prodip Bishwas, 24, Md helal, 24, and Turjo Mohonto, 26 and Md Nahid Raihan.

On Wednesday, the female student was walking with her friend when seven to eight men took them to the under-construction building. They beat up her friend and raped her there. 

On Thursday, a group of locals attacked the protesting students leaving at least 30, injured.

Four critically injured students were hospitalized.

Later in the day, the students were assaulted on the campus again by some goons.
