A staff of Faridpur Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College and Hospital (BSMMCH) has been accused of abandoning an elderly patient undergoing treatment there on the streets.
Accused caregiver Meghla left Mosharraf Hossain, 60, out on the hospital premises beside Faridpur-Barisal Highway on Friday morning, confirmed Faridpur Kotwali police Sub-Inspector Sujan.
Locals called 999 when they found Mosharraf on the streets.
Later, the hospital authorities re-admitted him when they saw police and journalists at the scene, the SI said, adding that the family had been informed.
According to the patient, who is a day labourer, he was undergoing treatment at the hospital for the last 22 days, but received no proper care.
“They gave me medicines for a few days but no one would come near me after that. I sought help but was shunned to a corner,” he said.
He added that, around 6am on Friday, Meghla put him on a stretcher saying he would be undergoing some tests, and left him out on the street.
Mosharraf was transferred to the BSMMCH from Madhukhola Upazila Health Complex for injuries he sustained in a road accident.
“He mainly has issues from waist downwards. He cannot walk and the injuries on his head created some problems too,” a nurse requesting anonymity told Dhaka Tribune.
“He relieved himself on the bed and shouted at everyone,” she said, adding that no family members or next to kin came looking for him.
She, however, was unable to say how the 60-year-old ended up on the streets.
Meanwhile, BSMMCH Director Dr Md Saifur Rahman said he was not aware of the matter.
“I’m currently in Magura on an official trip. I will look into it after I return and steps will be taken against those who did this,” he said.
