Mother, daughter tied to tree, tortured in Rangpur

A mother and a daughter in Rangpur were tied up to a tree and tortured, an incident police allegedly refused to record until a video of the incident went viral on social media two days later.

The incident was reported from Pirgacha upazila’s Parul union on Wednesday, said Pirgacha Police OC Shukkur Ali.

Both the victims, severely injured, are currently undergoing treatment at the local state-run hospital, said local Union Parishad member Abdul Khaleque.

According to the victim’s family, even though they tried to file a case against 17 people over the torture of the women, police refused to record the case until Friday when a video of the incident went viral.

Four people have been arrested since the case was filed, Pirgacha Police Sub-Inspector Shahidul Alam said. He, however, refused to disclose the name of the arrestees.

Meanwhile, the family alleged that the prime accused Zia has not yet been arrested.

According to locals and police, there was an existing land dispute between Shahjahan Mia’s family and their neighbour Zia.

On Wednesday, Zia and his men went to the victims’ land and started cutting down the trees there.

When members of Shahjahan’s family tried to stop them, they were tied up to a tree nearby and beaten up mercilessly.

Locals called 999 when the Pirgacha police rescued the women and took them to the upazila health complex.
