Four people have been killed in in road accidents across the country in the past 24 hours.
In Dhaka’s Jatrabari area, an unidentified 60-year-old woman was killed after she was hit by a motorcycle around 11am on Thursday.
The motorcycle rider took her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where on-duty declared her dead, confirmed DMCH police outpost In-Charge, Inspector Bachchu Mia.
He said the body has been kept in the hospital’s morgue for autopsy and the driver has been detained. The police station concerned has also been informed.
In Dhaka’s Bakshi Bazar area, another woman named Nur Jahan Begum, 70, was killed after a covered van ran over her around 9:30pm on Wednesday.
The deceased’s grandson Shihab said his grandmother and his sister, Tasnim, 21, was on their way to a relative’s house in Lalbag when a covered van hit their rickshaw from back. Both of them fell down and the van ran over his grandmother, killing her on the spot. The rickshaw puller was also injured in the incident.
They were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where on-duty doctors declared Nur Jahan dead around 10:30pm while the others received primary treatment, confirmed Chawkbazar police station sub-inspector (SI) Rajib Sarkar.
“The body has been kept in the hospital’s morgue for autopsy. We have seized the covered van and arrested the driver,” the SI added.
In Sylhet, a student of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) was killed after his motorcycle was hit by a truck at Subid Bazar area.
The incident took place at 9pm on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Shabbir Ahmed, a first-year student of the Chemistry Department.

Witnesses said a truck hit Shabbir's motorcycle from behind at the Subidbazar point and he lost control of his motorcycle and fell on the street. He died on spot.
Kotwali Model Police Station SI Abdus Sattar, while confirming the incident to Dhaka Tribune, said after receiving the information, police seized the truck and arrested the driver upon reaching the spot.
The body was recovered and sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue.

Meanwhile, agitated students and locals blocked burned tires on the road in front of the university’s main gate protesting Shabbir’s death and disrupting traffic for about half an hour.
Apart from the general students, the leaders and activists of Chhatra League also participated in this protest.
The agitated students also demanded exemplary punishment for the truck driver, designating alternative roads for truck movement instead of the road in front of the university, and enforcing truck speed limit after 11pm.
Following assurance of meeting their demands from the university's Director of Student Advice and Guidance Professor Zahir Uddin Ahmed, acting proctor Abu Hena Pahil and Sylhet Metropolitan Police DC Azbahar Ali Sheikh, the students withdrew their road blockade at midnight.
In Thakurgaon Sadar upazila, a motorcycle rider was killed after he tried to overtake a stone laden truck on Dhaka-Panchagarh Highway in Board Bazar Bhulli area around 10:30pm on Wednesday.
The deceased is Mizan Rahman Minu, 24, from Madarganj area of the upazila.
Thakurgaon Highway Police Sub Inspector Md Hafeez said Mizan died on the spot and his body was handed over to his family after autopsy at Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital morgue.
Police failed to seize the truck or arrest its driver, he added.
