Government publishes initial list of 147,537 freedom fighters

The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs on Thursday published the primary list of freedom fighters who fought for freedom in the Liberation War.

In the first phase, a total of 147,537 freedom fighters have been enlisted by the ministry, Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque said in a press briefing on Thursday.

Moreover, the ministry also published the names of 191 martyred intellectuals who lost their lives in the liberation war in 1971.

However, currently, a total of 201,461 freedom fighters receive honorarium from the government while a total of 251,285 people claim themselves as freedom fighters.

The minister earlier said the number of genuine freedom fighters will not be more than 210,000.

Earlier, the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs formed a verification and selection committee comprising researchers, freedom fighters and ministry officials in order to prepare a list of martyred intellectuals.

The committee formed in this regard, aims to prepare the list correctly by sorting out information obtained from research books, magazine cuttings, TV reports etc. Furthermore, the committee will also screen the applications of individuals from various ministries, divisions, agencies, districts, upazilas and other sources and will also recommend their inclusion in the list of martyred intellectuals.
