Children among 3 killed in Matarbari gas cylinder blast

A hydrogen gas cylinder explosion in Matarbari area of Cox’s Bazar’s Moheshkhali upazila left three dead and several others injured on Friday.

The deceased are Md Ehsan, 12, Ershadur Rahman, 10, and balloon seller Md Alamgir, 38.

Around 10:30am on Friday, a gas cylinder exploded at Matarbari Government Primary School’s field, confirmed Moheshkhali Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Zahidur Rahman.

He said: “Today [on Friday], Azizia Kasemul Ulum Madrasa, situated at Matarbari’s Nuton Bazar area, was holding their annual program on the school ground. On this occasion, a balloon seller went to the program with his wares where the hydrogen cylinder exploded.”

Matarbari Health Complex medical examiner, Dr Yakub Ali, said: “Around 10:30am, on the government school field, a crowd of children had gathered around the balloon seller. At one point, the hydrogen gas cylinder brought for filling the balloons exploded causing mayhem at the fairground.”

Additional SP Zahid said, a Fire Service and Civil Defence and a police team reached the spot immediately after hearing the news.

He said the injured had been taken to Dulahazra and Chittagong medical college hospitals for treatment.
