Gunfight at Rohingya Camp: 1 killed, 10 injured

A Rohingya refugee was killed in a gunfight between two rival groups at the Chakmarkul Rohingya camp in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar early Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Nur Hakim, 30.

As many as 10 Rohingyas were also injured during the incident.

The two factions were reportedly embroiled in the gunfight in a bid to establish dominance at the camp.

Camp in-Charge Inspector Monir Hossain of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) said the gunfight took place between two groups of robbers, which left one Rohingya dead and another 10 injured.

“The injured have been rescued and are being treated at a hospital under the supervision of Save the Children, an NGO. The body of the deceased was sent to the morgue for autopsy,” he added.

Police are trying to catch the culprits, Monir said.

Rohingya man murders local shop employee in Ukhiya

In another incident, a local employee of a shop in the Coat Bazar area of Ukhiya upazila in Cox’s Bazar was reportedly murdered by a Rohingya man in the early hours of Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Forkan Ahmed Kalu, 22. 

Police have yet to identify the Rohingya man.

The accused worked at the same store. After killing Forkan while he was asleep, the Rohingya man took off with Tk45,000 in cash from the shop, according to police.

Ukhiya police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ahmed Sanjur Morshed said: “We recovered the dead body around 11am Sunday. We suspect that the murder was committed out of greed. Shop owner Shah Alam has been detained for questioning, and we are still trying to capture the offender.”

The body was sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

“Legal action is being taken in this regard,” the OC added.
