Suspected yaba dealer killed in Cox's Bazar ‘gunfight’

An alleged yaba dealer has been killed in a reported gunfight with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Cox's Bazar's Teknaf on Saturday.

The identity of the deceased could not be known yet.

The incident took place at no 1 Sluice Gate area of the Naf River in Teknaf around 4am on Saturday.

BGB recovered 210,000 pieces of yaba tablets, a locally made weapon and two rounds of bullets from the spot, says a press release signed by Lt Col Md Foysal Hasan Khan of Teknaf-2 BGB.

"A BGB special team was on patrol by speedboat in the Naf River and saw three people enter Bangladesh from Myanmar by a boat." When BGB signaled them to stop, they opened fire, forcing BGB to retaliate.

Two people from the boat jumped into the river and went towards the Myanmar border leaving their injured associate behind. Afterwards BGB took the unidentified "smuggler" to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. His body was sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Two BGB men injured in the incident were given first aid. Necessary actions were taken in accordance with the law, the press release said.
