At least four people, including three members of the same family, were killed and two others, including a child, seriously injured in a head-on collision between a car and a BRTC bus on the Kurigram-Rangpur Highway in Kurigram's Kathalbari union.
The accident took place in Raipur RDRS Bazar area of the highway around 8:15am on Thursday.
The deceased were identified as Akbar Hossain, 55, his wife Bilkis Begum, 50, their son Billal Hossain, 25, and the car driver Sohel Miya.
Among the injured is another passenger of the car, nine-year-year child Zainab and the bus driver's assistant.
Among the two injured, the bus driver's assistant is in critical condition.
Kurigram Sadar police station Inspector (Investigation) Anwarul Islam and Kurigram General Hospital’s emergency department's on-duty doctor Meherul Islam confirmed the matter.
Witnesses said a BRTC bus leaving from Kurigram collided head-on with a Kurigram-bound private car on the Kurigram-Rangpur Highway in Raipur RDRS Bazar area of Kanthalbari Union on Thursday morning. The driver of the car died on the spot and when five other passengers of the car were rushed to Kurigram General Hospital in critical condition and the on-duty doctor declared Billal Hossain dead.
The duty doctor Meherul Islam said Billal Hossain and the car driver died before they were brought to the hospital. Later Akbar Hossain and Bilkis Begum died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The condition of one of the other two injured is critical and he might be sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for better treatment, he added.
Citing one of the injured passengers, the doctor further said that the passengers of the private car were headed to a relative's house in Buraburi union of Ulipur upazila of Kurigram.
