Three children drowned in Comilla on Monday.
The incident occurred in the Khodedawdpur village of Homna upazila.
The deceased are Abtahi, 14, son of Amir Hossain Khandaker of Khodedawdpur village, Shakib, 11, son of Ripon Mian of the same village, and 17-month-old Md. Joynal Abedin, son of Md. Omar Faruk of Bhurbhuria village of Bancharampur upazila.
Family sources said that Abtahi had travelled to the home of his paternal grandfather from Dhaka on Friday. Shakib was also visiting the home of his maternal aunt at this time. On Monday morning, Abtahi and Shakib went to the pond beside the house to swim along with some other children. As they did not know how to swim, they both drowned. Relatives rescued Abtahi and Shakib and rushed them to the Homna Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared both of them dead.
On the same day, 17-month-old Mohammed Joynal Abedin, son of Md. Omar Faruk, died by drowning in the Bhurbhuria village of Bancharampur Upazila of Comilla.
The death of the three children has cast a shadow of mourning over the area.
The Homna police station OC Abul Kayes Akand said: “As there have been no written complaints from the family members of the deceased, the bodies have been transferred to them for burial.”
