A suspected criminal accused in multiple cases was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Zakiganj upazila of Sylhet.
The incident took place in Ajorgram under Sultanpur union at around 3:40am in the early hours of Monday.
The deceased Abdul Mannan Munna, 35, was accused in 12 cases namely drug dealing, smuggling, possession arms and explosives, and attempted robbery, confirmed Zakiganj police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mir Abdun Nasser.
According to police, Abdul was arrested Sunday afternoon as he had an arrest warrant issued against him. After extensive interrogation, Abdul informed the police that he had yaba pills and weapons stashed in his house. Subsequently, police took Abdul along on a drive to his house to recover the contraband items.
Upon their arrival, Abdul's associates attacked police in order to snatch him away. Police fired back in self-defence. After a while, when the criminals retreated police found that Abdul had received bullet injuries.
He was taken to Zakiganj Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
A locally-made firearm, five bullets, six sharp weapons and 800 yaba pills were recovered from the spot.
Three separate cases will be recorded in this regard, said the OC.
